■日本では、『おたまじゃくしはかえるの子』、『ごんべさんの赤ちゃん／太郎さんの赤ちゃん』、『友だち讃歌』、更には某ヨドバシカメラのテーマソングなど、様々な替え歌があって、多くの人々に愛唱されている。
　この『ジョン・ブラウン』が生まれた頃のアメリカは、南北戦争の真っ最中で、北軍の行軍曲として歌われた。

●ジョンブラウンのコメントには誤りがあります。リパブリック讃歌と、曲は同じですが、別の歌です。時代は、南北戦争時、北軍で、ジョンブラウンと同姓同名の兵士をからかって歌われていた(ジョンブラウンの屍)という歌の曲を基に北軍の司令官が、女性詩人に北軍の行進曲として、作詞を依頼してできたのがリパブリック讃歌です。関鑑子作曲となっているのも間違いで、ここに載っている詞は、関さんの作詞といえるものです。両方の曲の原詩には、こうした表現は、一部にあるものの、全体をとうしてはないので。
　ジョンブラウンという人物は、過激な黒人解放運動家で、１８５９年、旧バージニア州の連邦の武器庫を襲撃して、武器を奪い、その武器を黒人に与え、黒人解放を目指したのですが、肝心の黒人が決起せず、政府軍に捕らえられ、同年の１２月に、処刑されています。
　リパブリック讃歌は、その後、アメリカ共和党の準党歌になっています。共和党は、南北戦争後、北軍の政治組織として創られたので。
