ちょうのう狐／（奈良　まめ）


　むかしむかし、ある寺の坊さんが法事（ほんずこ）に行きました。

　法事が終わって帰ろうとすると、「油揚げが、たくさん残って困った。」と話しているのが聞こえました。坊さんが「余っているんだば、我にけなが（ください）。」と頼みますと、「こんだに（こんなに）和尚様あ、何すんず（するんですか）？」と不思議がりました。

　「なに、我、『ちょうのう』ごと（を）懲らしめるど思ってや。」
　「わい、和尚様、大丈夫でゴスが（ですか）？」、みんなは口々に心配しました。『ちょうのう』とは、ここら辺で悪さをする狐で、宝の玉をを持っていました。

　坊さんは『ちょうのう』の巣へ行って油揚げの臭い（かまり）をプンプンさせると、そのかまりに釣られて『ちょうのう』が出てきました。
　「おおー、ちょうのう、おめ（お前）の宝の玉と、我の宝とばぐらねが。（取り替えないか）」
　「したばってなー（しかしなぁ）」と、『ちょうのう』。
　坊さんは、「いでば、我の宝だっきゃ、こんだに（こんなに）いい匂い（かまり）するし、大したもんだよ。おめの宝ば先にに寄ごさなが（寄こせ）、へば我の宝やる。」
『ちょうのう』は油揚げが食いたい一心で、宝の玉を坊さんに渡しました。

　けれども、油揚げは食べると無くなってしまいます。油揚げを食べてしまった『ちょうのう』は、宝の玉が惜しくなりました。
　そこで、寺役人に化けて取り返しに行きましたが、坊さんはなかなか言うことを聞きません。『ちょうのう』は考えた末、その坊さんを育てたお婆さんに化けて行きました。「おめ、大した宝物ば手に入れたずばって（らしいが）、どれ、我さも見せなが。」、お婆さんの情にほだされた坊さんが宝の玉を見せると、正体を現した『ちょうのう』に取られてしまいました。

　坊さんは悔しくて（ばがくさくて）たまりません。そこで神様に化けて、『ちょうのう』の所に行くと、
　「こら、『ちょうのう』、おめは宝の玉を人間に取られたと聞いたが、本当か？」
　「いいえ、取り返して来ました。」「どれ見せろ。なるほど宝の玉だ。しかし、おめが持っていると、まんだ騙されるとマイネ（駄目だ）はんて（から）、我が預かる。」と、坊さん。
　こうして、『ちょうのう』は、またまた宝の玉を取られてしまいましたとさ。

Chounou the fox／（Mame　Nara）

　A long time ago there lived a priest (Oshosan)．One day he went to a Buddhist service for the dead．As he was getting ready to leave he heard that there was a lot of aburage (fried bean curd) left-over so the priest asked if he could take some home with him．

　One woman asked him what he was going to do with all the aburage．
"I'm going to punish Chounou the fox!" said the priest．Chounou was a fox who liked to always play practical jokes on the town people．He also owned a big round jewel．
Everyone wondered if the priest was feeling all right, it seemed a little strange to try and punish Chounou using aburage．

The next day the priest went to the house of Chounou the fox and spread the delicious smell of aburage all around．Soon Chounou came out unable to resist the smell of abutage．
　"Chounou, Chounou, I'll give you all this aburage in exchange for your jewel" said the priest．Chounou was unsure what to do then the priest said again,
　"This is very delicious aburage, I'll give you all this aburage for your jewel, first give me the jewel, then I'll give you the abutage!"

　It so happened that Chounou had been wanting to eat aburage for a very long time so he gave the jewel to the priest and the priest gave him the aburage．
　But after eating the aburage, Chounou had no more aburage and no jewel．He wished he hadn't given away the jewel．Chounou decided to get back the jewel, so he changed himself into a government official and went to the priest's temple．He demanded the jewel but the priest wouldn't give it back．
　Chounou thought again and this time he changed himself into the old woman who used to look after the priest when he was a young child．
Chounou went back to the temple and said
　 "I hear you have a beautiful jewel, please can I see it?"
The priest was glad to see the old woman and quickly went to get it．But as soon as, Chounou had the jewel again he changed back into his natural shape and ran-off with the jewel．

　The priest became very angry and thought very quickly．He changed himself into a god and went to see Chounou．
　He　said
　"Hey! KORA! Chounou, is it true that your jewel was stolen?"
　"Yes" said Chounou, "but I've just got it back．"
　The priest disguised as a god asked to see it and then said, "but if you have it, people will always try to steal it from you, why don t you give it to me for safe-keeping?" and the priest got the jewel back again．
